Many people think it is better to brush more carefully or temporarily skip the bleeding area.<br\/>Often, the opposite is actually necessary.<br\/>Regularly bleeding gums are usually a sign of <strong>inflamed gums<\/strong>. Plaque left along and between the teeth can cause an inflammatory response. The gums then become redder, swollen, and bleed more easily.<br\/>Fortunately, early-stage gum inflammation can often recover well when plaque is consistently removed.<br\/>In this article, we explain why gums can bleed, what you can do yourself, and when it is wise to visit your dentist or dental hygienist.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-waarom-bloedt-tandvlees\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Why do gums bleed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common cause of bleeding gums is a buildup of <strong>plaque<\/strong>.<br\/>Plaque is a soft layer of bacteria that constantly forms on teeth and molars. When plaque is insufficiently removed, the gums can react with inflammation.<br\/>We call this <strong>gingivitis<\/strong>.<br\/>Inflamed gums can become red and swollen and bleed easily during brushing or cleaning between the teeth.<br\/>Because gingivitis often causes little or no pain, people sometimes only notice something is wrong when they see blood on their toothbrush. <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-is-bloedend-tandvlees-normaal\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Is bleeding gums normal?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gums that regularly bleed during normal brushing are not considered healthy gums.<br\/>A one-time bleeding can, of course, occur. For example, you might accidentally damage the gums with a toothbrush, interdental brush, or a hard piece of food.<br\/>However, when the gums bleed in multiple places or almost every day, it is wise to investigate why.<br\/>Especially when bleeding is accompanied by redness, swelling, bad breath, or receding gums, there may be a gum problem. <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-moet-u-stoppen-met-poetsen-als-uw-tandvlees-bloedt\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Should you stop brushing if your gums bleed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No. Do not stop brushing because you see blood.<br\/>When plaque is the cause of the inflammation, the problem will persist if you avoid the bleeding area.<br\/>Therefore, brush carefully twice a day along the gum line with a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.<br\/>Brushing harder is not better. The goal is to carefully remove the plaque, not to scrub the gums with force.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-hoe-poetst-u-bij-bloedend-tandvlees\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>How do you brush with bleeding gums?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pay extra attention to the transition between the teeth and the gums. This is exactly where plaque can easily remain.<br\/>Place the toothbrush gently against the gum line and ensure that you systematically reach all teeth and molars.<br\/>An electric toothbrush can be useful for this, especially if it has a pressure sensor that warns you if you brush too hard.<br\/>Do the gums bleed during brushing? Continue to clean the area gently but thoroughly.<br\/>When plaque is the cause and oral hygiene improves, the gums should bleed less over time.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-moet-u-ook-tussen-de-tanden-reinigen\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Should you also clean between the teeth?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes. A toothbrush does not always sufficiently reach the spaces between teeth and molars.<br\/>Plaque can remain there, and gum inflammation can develop specifically between the teeth.<br\/>For many adults, <strong>interdental brushes<\/strong> can be suitable for cleaning these spaces. It is important that the size fits the space: a brush that is too small cleans insufficiently, and one that is too large can be uncomfortable.<br\/>Your dentist or dental hygienist can assess which tools and sizes are suitable for your teeth and show you how to use them.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-waarom-bloedt-mijn-tandvlees-als-ik-net-begin-met-ragers\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Why do my gums bleed when I first start using interdental brushes?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This occurs regularly.<br\/>If you have not cleaned between your teeth for a long time, the gums there may already be inflamed. As soon as you start using interdental brushes, they may bleed easily.<br\/>This does not automatically mean that the brush is causing damage.<br\/>When you use the correct size and technique and continue to clean well daily, the inflammation can decrease and the bleeding should gradually subside.<br\/>If the gums continue to bleed despite good cleaning or if using the brushes is painful, have it checked to see if you are using the correct size and technique and if there is more going on.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-kan-tandsteen-bloedend-tandvlees-veroorzaken\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Can tartar cause bleeding gums?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plaque that is not removed can calcify over time into <strong>tartar<\/strong>.<br\/>Tartar has a rough surface on which new plaque can easily accumulate. This can make it more difficult to keep the area clean yourself.<br\/>Unlike soft plaque, you cannot properly remove hardened tartar yourself with a toothbrush.<br\/>When tartar contributes to gum problems, professional dental cleaning by a dentist or dental hygienist may be necessary. <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-kan-te-hard-poetsen-tandvlees-laten-bloeden\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Can brushing too hard make gums bleed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, mechanical damage can cause bleeding.<br\/>Brushing hard is therefore not the solution for inflamed gums. Excessive brushing pressure can unnecessarily strain the gums and tooth necks.<br\/>Use a soft brush and let the brush do the work.<br\/>Do you regularly have damage to the gums or do you doubt your brushing technique? A dental hygienist can look with you at how you can brush more effectively without using unnecessary force.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-kan-tandvlees-tijdens-de-zwangerschap-sneller-bloeden\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Can gums bleed more easily during pregnancy?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes. During pregnancy, hormonal changes can cause the gums to react more strongly to existing plaque.<br\/>As a result, the gums can become red, swollen, or bleed more quickly.<br\/>This does not mean you should stop brushing during pregnancy if the gums bleed. Good oral hygiene remains important.<br\/>If you suffer a lot from bleeding or swollen gums during pregnancy, discuss this during your dental check-up or with the dental hygienist.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-kan-roken-tandvleesproblemen-verbergen\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Can smoking hide gum problems?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, and that is important to know.<br\/>Smoking can reduce the bleeding response of the gums. As a result, someone with gum inflammation may sometimes have remarkably little bleeding of the gums.<br\/>Little bleeding in a smoker does not automatically mean that the gums are healthy.<br\/>In addition, smoking is a major risk factor for periodontal problems and can unfavorably influence the prognosis of treatment. <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-wanneer-wordt-gingivitis-parodontitis\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>When does gingivitis become periodontitis?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With gingivitis, the inflammation is limited to the gums, and the supporting tissue around the teeth has not yet been lost.<br\/>When gum inflammation develops further in a susceptible person and the supporting tissue and jawbone around the teeth are also affected, we speak of <strong>periodontitis<\/strong>.<br\/>You cannot always see that distinction yourself.<br\/>Periodontitis can cause little pain for a long time. Therefore, an examination of the gums may be necessary to determine how healthy the supporting tissue around your teeth and molars is. <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-welke-klachten-kunnen-wijzen-op-parodontitis\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Which complaints can indicate periodontitis?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bleeding gums alone do not automatically mean you have periodontitis.<br\/>However, there are signals where further investigation is extra important. Think, for example, of gums that remain inflamed for a long time, receding gums, teeth that appear to be getting longer, pus around the gums, persistent bad breath, or teeth that are starting to become loose.<br\/>If you have one or more of these complaints, have your gums assessed.<br\/>Do not wait until it starts to hurt, because periodontal problems can cause relatively few complaints for a long time. <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-wanneer-moet-u-met-bloedend-tandvlees-naar-de-tandarts-of-mondhygienist\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>When should you see a dentist or dental hygienist for bleeding gums?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When your gums bleed regularly and this does not clearly improve despite careful brushing and cleaning between the teeth, a check-up is wise.<br\/>Also contact us when bleeding is accompanied by clear swelling, pus, receding gums, a bad taste or smell, or loose teeth.<br\/>The dentist or dental hygienist can assess whether there is gingivitis, tartar, or possibly a more extensive gum problem.<br\/>Subsequently, a treatment and prevention advice can be drawn up that fits your situation.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-wat-doet-de-mondhygienist-bij-bloedend-tandvlees\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>What does the dental hygienist do for bleeding gums?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A dental hygienist first looks at the health of the gums and at places where plaque and tartar are present.<br\/>If necessary, the gums and the spaces around the teeth can be measured.<br\/>Plaque and tartar that you cannot properly remove yourself can be professionally cleaned. In addition, you will receive an explanation about daily oral care.<br\/>The latter is important: professional cleaning alone is usually not sufficient if plaque continues to accumulate at home.<br\/>The goal is for you to be able to keep the teeth as clean as possible yourself afterwards. <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-helpt-mondwater-tegen-bloedend-tandvlees\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Does mouthwash help against bleeding gums?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mouthwash can be recommended as a supplement in certain situations, but it does not replace the mechanical removal of plaque.<br\/>The foundation remains careful toothbrushing and, when necessary, cleaning between the teeth.<br\/>Therefore, do not use a strong antibacterial mouthwash on your own initiative for a long time in the expectation that the cause of bleeding gums will disappear.<br\/>When a specific mouthwash is useful, the dentist or dental hygienist can advise which product and which duration of use fit the situation.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-hoe-voorkomt-u-bloedend-tandvlees\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>How do you prevent bleeding gums?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Healthy gums start with the daily removal of plaque.<br\/>Brush carefully twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and pay attention to the gum line. Clean the spaces between teeth and molars with tools that fit your teeth.<br\/>In addition, have the health of your gums checked periodically.<br\/>When tartar develops or certain places are difficult to keep clean, professional guidance by the dental hygienist can help.<br\/>Smoking increases the risk of gum problems.
