Perhaps you have recently moved, are looking for a dentist for your family, or no longer feel comfortable at your current practice.
Choosing a good dentist involves more than just location or online reviews. You want a dentist who is expert, listens to you, and clearly explains which treatments are necessary.
At We Smile Tandartsen in Leiden, we value personal attention, trust, and transparency. With these seven tips, you will discover what to look for when choosing a dental practice.

Why is it important to choose the right dentist?

A dentist plays a vital role in keeping your teeth healthy. During periodic check-ups, problems such as cavities, wear, and gum disease can be detected early.
Additionally, it is pleasant when you feel at ease and dare to ask questions.
A good dentist not only helps you with complaints but also thinks along with you regarding prevention and the preservation of your own teeth.
Read more about the importance of a periodic dental check-up.

Checklist: 7 tips to find the best dentist in Leiden

Check if the practice is accepting new patients

Not every dental practice in Leiden has room for new patients.
Therefore, check in advance whether you can register and how the first appointment proceeds.
New patients are welcome at We Smile Tandartsen. During an intake, we assess your teeth and discuss your wishes.

Look at the treatments offered

Not every practice offers the same treatments.
Do you have specific wishes, such as invisible braces, extensive oral hygiene, or guidance for dental anxiety? Then check if the practice offers this care.
It is also important that a dentist refers you in a timely manner when specialist treatment is required.

Pay attention to location and accessibility

A dentist close to home or work makes it easier to come in for regular check-ups.
Do you live in Leiden Centrum, the Merenwijk, Stevenshof, or a surrounding area? Then look at the accessibility of the practice and the opening hours.

Also ask how the practice organizes emergency complaints during and outside of opening hours.

Read experiences from other patients

Online reviews can help when comparing dental practices.
Pay particular attention to experiences with:

Friendliness and personal attention

Clear explanations during treatments

Handling anxious patients

Transparency regarding costs

Accessibility and communication

Reviews are personal experiences. Therefore, use them as one of several factors in your choice.

Inquire about costs and treatment plans

The maximum rates for many dental treatments in the Netherlands are established by the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa).
Nevertheless, total costs can vary per practice, for example, because a different treatment or different materials are required.
A reliable dentist explains which treatment is advised, why it is necessary, and what alternatives exist.
For more extensive treatments, you should receive clarity regarding the expected costs in advance.

View the equipment and treatment methods

Modern equipment can contribute to accurate diagnostics and a comfortable treatment.
At We Smile Tandartsen, we work with digital X-ray equipment, a 3D oral scanner, and the Quicksleeper anesthesia system, among others.
However, technology is not the most important thing. The expertise of the dentist and a careful treatment plan remain decisive.

Choose a dentist with whom you feel comfortable

Trust is perhaps the most important part of a good dentist-patient relationship.
A dentist should listen to your complaints, explain treatment options, and take your personal situation into account.
Are you nervous about a treatment? Then extra attention is important.
Read how we handle fear of the dentist in Leiden.

What makes a dentist the best choice for you?

The best dentist is not the same for everyone.
One patient finds a child-friendly environment important, while someone else primarily values extensive explanations, modern treatment techniques, or guidance for dental anxiety.
When making your choice, therefore, pay attention to three important points:

Trust: do you feel heard and taken seriously?

Expertise: do you receive understandable explanations and appropriate treatment options?

Transparency: do you know in advance what a treatment entails and costs?

During a first appointment, you can assess for yourself whether a dental practice suits you.

A dentist in Leiden for different patients

Families with children

For families, it is pleasant when parents and children can visit the same practice.
A child-friendly approach helps children to become familiar with the dentist at a young age.
Read more about our pediatric dentistry in Leiden.

Students and young adults

Students often pay attention to accessibility and costs.
From the age of 18, regular dental treatments usually no longer fall under basic insurance. It is therefore wise to look at the costs and insurance options in advance.
Also read what dental insurance covers.

International patients and expats

For international patients, communication in English can be important.
A dentist who can clearly explain treatments and costs in English makes it easier to make well-informed choices.
At We Smile Tandartsen, patients can also be assisted in English.

Frequently asked questions about choosing a dentist

Can I simply switch to another dentist?

Yes. You can choose another dental practice yourself. With your consent, your previous dentist can transfer the relevant data from your dental records.

How do I know if a dentist is expert?

In the Netherlands, a dentist must be authorized to practice the profession and be registered in the BIG register. You can check this registration via the public BIG register.

Are all dentists in Leiden equally expensive?

National maximum rates apply to many dental procedures. The total treatment price may vary because the treatment plan and the necessary procedures are not always the same.

How quickly can I be seen by a new dentist?

This varies per practice and depends on available appointments. Inquire in advance about the possibilities for an intake.

Getting to know We Smile Tandartsen in Leiden

Are you looking for a new dentist in Leiden?
At We Smile Tandartsen, we take the time to examine your teeth, discuss your wishes, and clearly explain any treatments.
We find it important that you understand what care is needed and can participate in decisions about your treatment.

New patients can easily register online and schedule a first appointment.

The best dentist for you is a dentist in whom you have confidence and where your oral health comes first.

{
  “@context”: “https://schema.org”,
  “@type”: “FAQPage”,
  “mainEntity”: [
    {
      “@type”: “Question”,
“name”: “Hoe snel kan ik terecht bij een nieuwe tandarts?”,
      “acceptedAnswer”: “@type”: “Answer”,
        “text”: “Dit verschilt per praktijk.
