In such a situation, a <strong>crown<\/strong> may be considered.<br\/>A crown covers a large part of the tooth or molar and helps restore its shape and function. However, not every damaged tooth automatically requires a crown. Sometimes a filling or another restoration may be sufficient.<br\/>So, when is a crown advisable? How is a crown made and how long can it last? In this article, we explain it step by step.     <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-wat-is-een-kroon\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>What is a crown?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A crown is a custom-made restoration placed over a prepared tooth or molar.<br\/>You can compare it to a protective cap that encloses the remaining tooth and restores the original shape as much as possible.<br\/>The crown is made to match your bite and the surrounding teeth and molars. For visible teeth, factors such as shape and color are also taken into account.<br\/>A crown is permanently attached and therefore remains fixed in the mouth. <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-wanneer-kan-een-kroon-nodig-zijn\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>When might a crown be necessary?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are several situations in which a dentist may advise a crown.<br\/>It is important to look not only at how much dental tissue has been lost, but also at the position of the tooth, the load during chewing, existing fillings, any cracks, and the condition of the root and surrounding tissue.<br\/>Below we discuss a number of common situations.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-1-bij-een-sterk-beschadigde-tand-of-kies\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>1. For a severely damaged tooth or molar<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a large part of a tooth or molar has broken off or been lost due to caries, there may be insufficient healthy dental tissue remaining for a predictable regular filling.<br\/>A crown can enclose the remaining dental tissue and restore the shape and chewing function.<br\/>Whether a crown is actually necessary depends on how much healthy dental tissue is still present and where it is located.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-2-bij-een-zeer-grote-bestaande-vulling\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>2. For a very large existing filling<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A tooth or molar with a large filling sometimes consists of only a limited amount of natural dental tissue.<br\/>When the remaining walls are thin or fragile, the chance of fracture may increase. In such a situation, a restoration that better protects the weakened parts may be considered.<br\/>This does not always have to be a full crown. Depending on the situation, a partial restoration, such as an onlay, may also be possible.<br\/>The starting point is to preserve healthy dental tissue wherever possible.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-3-na-een-wortelkanaalbehandeling\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>3. After a root canal treatment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a root canal treatment, it must be assessed how the tooth or molar can best be permanently restored.<br\/>It is not the case that every root canal-treated tooth automatically needs a crown.<br\/>Especially for molars that have already lost a lot of dental tissue, extra protection against fracture may be advisable. For other teeth, a different restoration may be sufficient.<br\/>The dentist therefore looks at the amount of remaining dental tissue, the location of the tooth, and the forces applied to it during chewing. <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-4-bij-een-gebroken-of-gescheurde-tand\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>4. For a broken or cracked tooth<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A piece of a tooth can break off, for example, while eating or because the tooth was already weakened by a large filling.<br\/>Sometimes the missing part can be restored with composite. For larger damage, a crown or partial crown may be a better solution.<br\/>In the case of a crack, it is first important to determine how deep it runs. Not every cracked tooth can be saved with a crown.<br\/>Therefore, a broken or cracked tooth must always be carefully examined first.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-5-bij-ernstige-slijtage-van-het-gebit\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>5. For severe dental wear<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teeth and molars can wear down over time. This can be related to grinding or clenching, for example, but also to erosion or a combination of various factors.<br\/>When a lot of dental tissue has been lost, restorative treatment may be necessary to restore shape and function.<br\/>A crown can be part of that in certain situations, but nowadays, treatments that preserve as much of the natural dental tissue as possible are preferred where feasible. <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-6-voor-het-verbeteren-van-vorm-of-kleur\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>6. To improve shape or color<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A crown can also change the shape and color of a tooth.<br\/>However, a full crown for an otherwise healthy tooth should not automatically be the first choice when the problem is purely aesthetic. After all, dental tissue must be removed for a crown.<br\/>Depending on the situation, less invasive options, such as composite or another aesthetic restoration, can be discussed. <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-wat-is-het-verschil-tussen-een-kroon-en-een-vulling\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>What is the difference between a crown and a filling?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A filling is used to restore a missing part of a tooth or molar. The remaining dental tissue remains largely untouched.<br\/>A crown covers a much larger part of the tooth.<br\/>For relatively limited damage, a filling may be sufficient. When little healthy dental tissue remains or when the remaining parts have insufficient support, a crown or other indirect restoration may be considered.<br\/>Larger does not automatically mean better. The goal is to choose a restoration that is sufficiently strong while preserving as much healthy dental tissue as possible.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-wat-is-het-verschil-tussen-een-kroon-en-een-onlay\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>What is the difference between a crown and an onlay?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between a regular filling and a full crown, other options also exist.<br\/>An <strong>onlay<\/strong> is a custom-made restoration that covers a portion of the tooth or molar. In this case, the entire tooth does not always have to be prepared all around as with a traditional full crown.<br\/>In certain situations, this allows more of the natural dental tissue to be preserved.<br\/>Whether a filling, onlay, or crown is most suitable depends on the quantity and quality of the remaining dental tissue and the load on the tooth. <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-hoe-weet-de-tandarts-of-een-kroon-nodig-is\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>How does the dentist know if a crown is necessary?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before a crown is advised, the tooth or molar is examined.<br\/>The dentist looks at existing fillings, any fractures or cracks, the amount of healthy dental tissue, and the way the tooth is loaded.<br\/>If necessary, an X-ray can provide additional information about the root, previous root canal treatments, or other problems.<br\/>Afterwards, the various treatment options can be discussed.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-hoe-wordt-een-kroon-geplaatst\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>How is a crown placed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Making a crown usually happens in several steps.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-stap-1-voorbereiden-van-de-tand\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 1: Preparing the tooth<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a traditional crown is chosen, the tooth or molar is prepared. Dental tissue is removed to create sufficient space for the crown.<br\/>If necessary, this is done under local anesthesia. <\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-stap-2-digitale-scan\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 2: Digital scan<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After preparation, the exact shape of the tooth and the surrounding teeth and molars must be recorded.<br\/>At <strong>We Smile Tandartsen<\/strong>, we can use a digital 3D scan of the teeth for this. As a result, in suitable situations, no traditional impression with impression material needs to be made. <\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-stap-3-tijdelijke-kroon\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 3: Temporary crown<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The permanent crown is custom-made. In the intervening period, a temporary crown can be placed to protect the prepared tooth.<br\/>This temporary provision is not as strong as the permanent crown. It is therefore advisable to handle it with care.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-stap-4-plaatsen-van-de-definitieve-kroon\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 4: Placing the permanent crown<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the permanent crown is ready, it is first checked.<br\/>The dentist assesses the fit, connection, and bite, among other things. For a visible tooth, the shape and color are also examined.<br\/>When everything is correct, the crown can be permanently attached. <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-doet-het-plaatsen-van-een-kroon-pijn\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Does placing a crown hurt?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The preparation of a vital tooth or molar can be performed under local anesthesia. As a result, you should not feel any sharp pain during the treatment.<br\/>Afterwards, the tooth may be temporarily sensitive. The gums around the treated tooth may also feel sensitive for a short time.<br\/>Persistent or increasing pain is a reason to contact the dentist.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-waar-wordt-een-kroon-van-gemaakt\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>What is a crown made of?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowns can be manufactured from various materials.<br\/>Nowadays, tooth-colored ceramic materials are often used. Which material is suitable depends, among other things, on the location of the crown, the available space, the load during chewing, and the desired appearance.<br\/>A crown on a front tooth, for example, places different demands on aesthetics than a crown on a heavily loaded molar.<br\/>The choice of material is therefore determined per situation. <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-hoe-lang-gaat-een-kroon-mee\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>How long does a crown last?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A crown does not have a fixed expiration date.<br\/>A well-functioning crown can last for many years, but the lifespan varies per person and per tooth. I would therefore not use the old saying that a crown lasts <strong>\u201caverage 10 to 15 years\u201d<\/strong> as an expectation or guarantee.<br\/>The lifespan is influenced by the condition of the underlying tooth, oral hygiene, gums, load, grinding or clenching, and the development of new caries along the edge of the crown.<br\/>A crown itself cannot get a cavity, but the natural tooth underneath still can. <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-hoe-verzorgt-u-een-kroon\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>How do you care for a crown?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A crown must be cared for just like your natural teeth.<br\/>Brush carefully twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and pay extra attention to the transition between the crown and the gums.<br\/>The spaces next to the crown must also be cleaned well. Depending on your teeth, this can be done with interdental brushes, for example.<br\/>Regular check-ups remain important to assess not only the crown itself, but also the underlying tooth and the surrounding gums. <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-kan-een-kroon-loskomen-of-breken\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Can a crown come loose or break?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That can happen, although a crown is intended to remain fixed for a long time.<br\/>Contact the dentist if a crown moves, comes loose, or becomes damaged. If the crown has come loose completely, you can keep it and bring it to your appointment.<br\/>Do not attempt to reattach a loose crown yourself with household glue.<br\/>The dentist must first assess why the crown has come loose and whether the underlying tooth is still healthy and sufficiently strong. <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-kan-iedere-beschadigde-tand-met-een-kroon-worden-gered\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Can every damaged tooth be saved with a crown?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No.<br\/>There must be sufficient healthy and usable dental tissue present to reliably support a crown.
