Do you suffer from bleeding gums, bad breath, or receding gums? If so, you may have periodontitis. This is an inflammation of the gums and the tissues surrounding your teeth and molars, which can also lead to jawbone loss.
Periodontitis does not always cause pain. As a result, the condition can go unnoticed for a long time.
At We Smile Tandartsen in Leiden, we examine the health of your gums and discuss the treatment required to prevent further damage as much as possible.
What is periodontitis?
Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease that affects the tissues supporting the teeth and molars.
The condition is caused by the body’s reaction to bacteria in dental plaque. This often begins with a superficial gum inflammation, also known as gingivitis.
When the inflammation spreads, deeper spaces can develop between the tooth and the gum. These are called pockets. Eventually, the jawbone surrounding the teeth can also be broken down.
The distinction is important:
- Gingivitis: inflamed gums without loss of supporting tissue.
- Periodontitis: inflammation where supporting tissue and jawbone are also lost.
Lost jawbone usually does not grow back on its own after a standard dental cleaning. However, with proper treatment, the disease can often be stabilized.
What are the symptoms of periodontitis?
Periodontitis often develops gradually. Possible signs include:
- Bleeding gums during brushing or cleaning.
- Red, swollen, or sensitive gums.
- Receding gums.
- Persistent bad breath.
- Gaps between teeth that appear to be widening.
- Loose teeth or molars.
Please note: periodontitis can also be present without clear symptoms or bleeding.
This is why we also check the health of your gums during periodic check-ups.
How is periodontitis treated?
Treatment is aimed at reducing inflammation and preventing further loss of supporting tissue.
Examination of the gums
The dentist or dental hygienist measures the pockets around your teeth and molars. If necessary, X-rays are taken to assess the bone level.
A treatment plan is drawn up based on this data.
Thorough cleaning by the dental hygienist
In the case of periodontitis, plaque and tartar are carefully removed above and below the gum line.
The dental hygienist also cleans the root surfaces. This allows the inflamed tissues the opportunity to recover.
In addition, you will receive personalized advice on tooth brushing and the use of interdental brushes.
Re-evaluation and aftercare
After the initial treatment phase, the gums are examined again. During this process, we assess whether the inflammation has subsided and if the pockets have become shallower.
In the case of persistent deep pockets, additional treatment or a referral to a periodontist may be necessary.
Even after successful treatment, regular aftercare appointments remain important.
Is periodontitis treatment painful?
A deep dental cleaning can be sensitive, especially when the gums are severely inflamed.
If necessary, the treatment can be performed under local anesthesia.
At We Smile Tandartsen, we also utilize the QuickSleeper, a computer-controlled anesthesia system that can be used for suitable treatments.
After cleaning, your teeth may be temporarily more sensitive to cold drinks. This sensitivity usually subsides gradually.
What happens if periodontitis is left untreated?
When periodontitis remains untreated, the inflammation can progress and affect more and more supporting tissue.
Possible consequences include:
- Further loss of jawbone.
- Receding gums.
- Loose teeth and molars.
- Eventual loss of teeth or molars.
The earlier periodontitis is detected and treated, the greater the chance that your own teeth can be preserved.
How can you prevent periodontitis?
Good daily oral care is essential to prevent gum problems and to keep treated periodontitis stable.
We recommend:
- Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
- Clean between your teeth daily using appropriate interdental brushes or other tools.
- Stop smoking.
- Have your gums checked regularly.
- Follow the aftercare appointments with the dental hygienist.
Diabetes and genetic predisposition can also influence the risk of periodontitis.
Have you had periodontitis before? Then proper aftercare remains important, even when your gums feel healthy again.
